What Lengths Am I Willing to go to In Order to do Right By Every Child?
It’s important to have a teaching/ learning relationship within a teacher and student. There will be times when a student refuses to learn specific skills or when they fail to do so, but our jobs as teachers is to keep pushing and encouraging them to learn rather than giving in to them not learning. As discussed in the article “I won’t learn from you”, we read how the teacher tricks her student into learning to read by reading the sentence and having him repeat it. So you can do similar tricks to help a student learn a specific skill. It will take time and practice, but it is possible.
It’s important that the school and classroom is an environment where students can embrace their culture without fear of being judged or belittled. Especially with teachers, a student will believe what their teacher tells them, so if the teacher belittles them, the students will feel that they are less. This is also explained in the article “I won’t learn from you” when it says, “A few actually learned what he taught and believed that they were stupid and incapable of productive lives”. I will make sure I create a safe environment in the classroom for all my students to feel comfimportantortable and supported. I will make sure I create different strategies for my students depending on how they learn best. Most importantly, I want my classroom and school to have equity for all students. If all of these things are implemented, the students will thrive and will feel positive in themselves, which will lead to them being successful, we not only shape them as students, but as people as well.
