It's 2022, Why Are Schools Still Segregated?
It’s 2022, and schools are still segregated. I know this because I went to a middle school and high school with about 90% hispanic students, 9% black students, and 1% white students. This is due to the area you live in, and what your zoned school is. In “Schools are still segregated, and black students are paying a price”, it says “black students are also in economically segregated schools. Less than one in three white students (31.3%) attend a high-poverty school, compared with more than 7 in 10 black students (72.4%).” A reason for this segregation is written in this article when it says “a black child faces a very high probability of ending up in a school where majority of her peers are both poor and students of color.” Additionally, we read “In contrast, about a fourth of white students (23.5%) attend schools where most of their peers are white and not poor, while only 3.1% of black children attend such schools.” This shows how your economic status, and the area you live in is reflected in the school you attend. Those with more money have more opportunity of attending a good school, while those with little money have a lower chance of attending a good school, and a high chance of attending a high-poverty school.
In the video “The Disturbing History of the Suburbs”, the main speaker says “the fact that so many suburbs are mostly white is no accident, it’s the result of decades and a racist federal policy that affect us to this day.” This suggests that the way people were segregated back then, is still seen today. So it’s not that schools are being purposely segregated today, it’s just that the segregation hasn’t been changed, the cycle hasn’t been broken, it’s like it’s just been automatically happening because that’s what we were born into, just like our older generations were born into it.
